Umbrella starts operating in Zafra and Olivenza the first two solar plants of its project portfolio in Extremadura

  • With an investment of 7.6 M€, the Zafra and Olivenza solar plants are the first of the five infrastructures planned by Umbrella for its project in Extremadura, which will generate a total power of 45 MWp and will inject 90,679 MWh per year into the grid of the region.
  • The grid connection of these two solar plants, with a photovoltaic field power of 4.82 and 4.20 MWp, will provide clean energy to more than 5,000 households with average consumption and will avoid the emission of about 3,000 tons of CO₂ per year
  • Both infrastructures stand out for integrating a responsible environmental approach in their design, with specific measures for the conservation of the ecosystem and local biodiversity.

The Spanish company Umbrella Global Energy, which specializes in solutions for the entire solar energy value chain, has completed the commissioning of two new solar plants in Zafra and Olivenza (Badajoz). The grid connection of these photovoltaic parks, which have a photovoltaic field power of 4.82 and 4.20 MWp, respectively, will generate 18,520 kWh of clean energy per year to supply more than 5,000 households with an average consumption, avoiding the emission of around 3,000 tons of CO₂.

Both facilities, which have received a total investment of €7.6 million, are the first solar plants to start operations of the five planned by Umbrella in Extremadura, located in the municipalities of Alenge, Hornachos and Villafranca de los Barros, together with those already active in Zafra and Olivenza. This set of infrastructures is part of the global project planned by the company for the region, with a total power of 45 MWp and the capacity to inject 90,679 MWh of electrical energy per year into the public grid.

The connection of these solar parks, whose energy production will be marketed on the wholesale electricity market, represents a new step in Umbrella’s strategic plan to reorient its activity from the construction of photovoltaic plants to an Independent Power Producer (IPP) model. This evolution is driven by the group’s continuous investment in technology and innovation, aimed at strengthening its position as a key player in the global energy market.

“The entry into operation of the Zafra and Olivenza wind farms is an important first step in the ambitious pipeline planned by Umbrella in Extremadura, as well as a demonstration of the value provided by solar projects adapted to the local environment. These initiatives reflect very well the pillars on which we are building the company’s roadmap in our transition to a model of Independent Power Producer benchmark: clean energy with a positive impact on local communities, commitment to energy transition and real long-term decarbonization goals,” said Enrique Selva, CEO of Umbrella Global Energy.

Responsible environmental approach to preserve the local ecosystem

The Zafra and Olivenza solar plants stand out for their environmentally responsible design, in line with the company’s ESG strategy and the sustainable approach of its infrastructures. To this end, both facilities have incorporated specific measures for the conservation of the local ecosystem, reconciling the generation of clean energy with the minimization of the impact on the environment. These measures include the conservation of the pre-existing vegetation layer on the plant sites, aimed at avoiding soil compaction, or herbaceous control through grazing and without the use of herbicides, to allow the recovery of the natural vegetation inside the enclosure.

Biodiversity preservation has also been taken into account from the early stages of design, with prior sampling of amphibian and reptile species to monitor their evolution, as well as radio-marking of the birds that inhabit the area. With the aim of contributing to the reproduction of these species and maintaining the natural balance of their communities, both photovoltaic parks have integrated waterlogging areas, nesting boxes, perches for birds of prey and shelters for reptiles and insects. The impact of all these measures will be evaluated during the operation of the plants through studies showing the evolution of biodiversity and the state of the soil.
